Placenta Encapsulation

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the mother’s placenta after the birth of her baby by steaming and dehydrating it to then be ground and placed into capsules for the mother to ingest as she sees fit.  This is known as the Traditional Chinese Method.  The ingestion of the placenta is known as “placentophagy.”

The purpose of placentophagy by the mother is to reintroduce the beneficial vitamins, minerals, hormones, proteins, and other nutrients to her body following labor and birth to help restore a more balanced body function, prevent “baby blues,” support emotional health, increase breast-milk production, shorten healing time, increase maternal energy levels, and provide an over-all feeling of wellness to aid in the transition between pregnancy and the early postpartum period in the woman who has just given birth.

When you have your placenta encapsulated with St Louis Doulas, you may choose to have it done in your home, or ours!

If you would like your placenta processed in your home, our encapsulator will schedule 2 visits to your home on consecutive days. The first for about 3 hours, and the second about 2 hours.  You are responsible for transporting your placenta home, and keeping it stored and refrigerated appropriately.  Your encapsulator will bring all necessary supplies to your home.  All she needs is access to your stove and sink, and a small amount of workspace in the kitchen.  Please be aware that your sink will be off limits for the first day until the encapsulator leaves, and it is best for children and pets to be kept out of the work space. The dehydrator will be left at your home, and it will need to remain on and undisturbed until the encapsulator returns the following day. 

If you choose to have your placenta encapsulated out of your home, St. Louis Doulas will arrange pickup from the location of your choice, and will deliver the completed capsules to your home.  She will provide you with usage instructions, contraindications, and will answer any questions you may have.  You can be confident that your encapsulator is educated in food safe handling methods, blood borne pathogens and transmission risks, OSHA safety standards, and is working in a clean, safe space. 

In addition to placenta encapsulation, we also offer placenta tinctures and salve.  These items are made from your own processed placenta, and can be used for both mother and child.  A few drops of placenta tincture is said to help in times of stress, transition, or emotional struggle.  Placenta salve is made from natural, high-quality oils, infused with placenta powder, and essential oils (optional).  It can be used on c-section scars, perineal tearing, and even on baby’s diaper rash.  You may have noticed some commercial skin care products contain sheep’s placenta extract.  Placenta salve has wonderful skin nourishing qualities, and is perfectly safe to use topically.
